What is outsider art?
From the psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn’s collection to Jean Dubuffet’s art brut: where outsider art comes from and how it is seen today.
The artists of the Între Spații project came together to shape the next art intervention in the hospital.

On 12 October, the Între Spații community took an important step forward. A diverse, creative group, made up of the artists selected from the project’s five partner centres and the members of our team, came together in an inspiring setting.
The aim of the meeting was not only to get to know one another better and to connect, but also to lay the conceptual foundations for the works the artists will make by December.
The day began naturally, with time to get closer and talk, and the first part of the meeting was given to building a bond of trust and community among the participants.

A brainstorming session followed, in which we looked at what is particular about medical spaces. We discussed how art can improve the look of the hospital’s transitional areas — the corridors and waiting areas that can become friendlier, warmer and more human for patients, medical staff and visitors.
To give all the ideas we discussed a visual form, we made a group collage together. From the texts, colours and images gathered in this shared exercise came the central theme that will guide the whole creative process in the coming period: “How does each of us feel joy?”

In the coming period (October – December), the artists will explore this theme individually and creatively, looking for visual answers to the question about joy and turning them into works of art for the hospital.
The final result will be exhibited in the project’s last art intervention, at the Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital in Cluj-Napoca. Through these works we hope to bring a splash of colour, hope and a sense of well-being to the hospital.
At the end of the meeting on 12 October, each artist received a kit of art materials, put together especially to accompany and support them throughout this creative process.
