At the beginning of September, the Între Spații project opened the first of its five planned art interventions, turning a medical space into an alternative cultural environment.

The event took place in the Laboratory of Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine and Balneology at the Ambulatoriul Integrat, the outpatient clinic of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital in Cluj-Napoca.

Biophilia: a purely visual nature in the hospital

The central concept of this work is biophilia, people’s innate tendency to seek a deep connection with nature. Although living nature is hard to bring into a hospital for reasons of hygiene, its visual representation offers the perfect answer.

The work brings in a purely visual nature, meant to restore the link with the outside world and to bring calm, quiet and familiarity to patients, their families and the medical staff, without breaking the rules of hygiene.

A double mission: accessible art and more colourful spaces

This first intervention showed works by people supported by the Fundația Estuar in Cluj-Napoca.

The initiative responds directly to two major needs in our society:

  • for the hospital: it turns neutral corridors and transitional spaces into welcoming places to look at;
  • for the artists: it offers artists who face social barriers, disabilities or vulnerable situations a real way into exhibiting, bringing their work into public view.

Where can you see the work?

The result of this first group intervention can be seen on the hospital’s second floor, where it will stay on show until the end of the year.

Each of the five stages of the Între Spații project will give a different area of the hospital a visual identity of its own, showing that art has real power to support recovery.
